Why You Must Read the Book Hidden Figures

Why You Must Read the Book 'Hidden Figures' Books and movies have a long-standing and complex relationship. When a book becomes a best-seller, there’s an almost inevitable film adaptation in the works almost immediately. Then again, sometimes books that remain under the radar are made into movies, and then become best-sellers. And sometimes a film version of a book sparks a national conversation that the book alone couldn’t quite manage. Such is the case with Margot Lee Shetterly’s book Hidden Figures. The film rights to the book were sold before it even published, and the film was released just three months after the book’s publication last year. And the film has become a sensation, grossing more than $66 million so far and becoming the center of the new conversation on race, sexism, and even the doleful state of the American space program. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, and Kevin Costner, the film takes a fairly well-worn format- the historical, inspirational true but previously-unknown story- and transcends it by leaving that story fairly unvarnished. It’s also a nearly perfect film for this moment in time, a moment when America is questioning its own identity, its history (and future) in terms of race and gender, and its place as a world leader. In short, Hidden Figures is definitely a movie you want to see. But it’s also a book you must read, even if you’ve seen the movie already and think you know the full story. A Deeper Dive Even though Hidden Figures is more than two hours long, it’s still a movie. That means it inescapably condenses events, elides moments, and deletes or combines characters and moments in order to create a narrative structure and a sense of drama. That’s fine; we all understand that a movie isn’t history. But you’ll never get the full story from a film adaptation. Films can be like the Cliff’s Notes versions of books, giving you a high-altitude overview of a story, but with manipulation and omission of timelines, people, and events. While Hidden Figures the movie might be compelling, enjoyable, and even somewhat educational, you’re missing half the story if you don’t read the book. The White Guy in the Room Speaking of manipulations, let’s talk about Kevin Costner’s character, Al Harrison. The Director of the Space Task Group didn’t actually exist, though of course there was a Director of the Space Task Group. There were several, in fact, during that period of time, and Costner’s character is a composite of three of them, based on the recollections of Katherine G. Johnson herself. Costner’s getting deserved praise for his performance as the white, middle-aged man who isn’t exactly a bad person- he’s just so enmeshed in his white, male privilege and the lack of awareness on racial issues at the time that he doesn’t even notice how oppressed and marginalized the black women in his department are. So there’s no question that the character’s writing and performance are great, and serve the story. The issue is the simple fact that someone in Hollywood knew they needed to have a male star of Costner’s caliber to get the film made and marketed, and that’s why his role is as large as it is, and why he gets a few set-piece speeches (especially the apocryphal destruction of the â€Å"Whites Only† bathroom sign) that make him as much the center of the story as Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. If all you do is watch the movie, you might think that Al Harrison existed, and was as much a hero as the brilliant female computers that are the true focus of the story. The Reality of Racism Hidden Figures the film is entertainment and as such, it needs villains. There is no doubt that racism was prevalent in the 1960s (as it is today) and that Johnson, Vaughan, and Jackson had to overcome challenges that their white and male colleagues didn’t even know existed. But according to Johnson herself, the film overstates the level of racism she actually experienced. The fact is, while prejudice and segregation were facts, Katherine Johnson says she â€Å"didn’t feel† the segregation at NASA. â€Å"Everybody there was doing research,† she said, â€Å"You had a mission and you worked on it, and it was important to you to do your job...and play bridge at lunch. I didnt feel any segregation. I knew it was there, but I didnt feel it.† Even the infamous bathroom-sprint across the campus was exaggerated; there were, in fact, bathrooms for blacks not nearly as far away- although there were indeed â€Å"white only† and â€Å"black only† facilities, and the black-only bathrooms were harder to find. Jim Parsons’ character, Paul Stafford, is a complete fabrication who serves to embody many of the typical sexist and racist attitudes of the time- but again, doesn’t actually represent anything that Johnson, Jackson, or Vaughan actually experienced. Hollywood needs villains, and so Stafford (as well as Kirsten Dunst’s character Vivian Mitchell) was created to be the oppressive, racist white male of the story, even though Johnson’s recollections of her experience at NASA were largely unremarkable. A Great Book None of this means the story of these women and their work on our space program isn’t well worth your time- it is. Racism and sexism are still problems today, even if we’ve gotten rid of much of the official machinery of it in everyday life. And their story is an inspiring one that languished in obscurity for far too long- even star Octavia Spencer thought the story was made-up when she was first contacted about playing Dorothy Vaughan. Even better, Shetterly has written a great book. Shetterly weaves her own story into the history, making clear the connections between the three women who are the focus of the book and the millions of black women who came after them- women who had a slightly better chance at realizing their dreams in part due to the fight that Vaughan, Johnson, and Jackson took on. And Shetterly writes with a gentle, inspiring tone that celebrates the achievements instead of wallowing in the obstructions. It’s a wonderful reading experience filled with information and incredible background you won’t get from the movie. Further Reading If you want to know a bit more about the role women of all colors played throughout the history of technology in America, try Rise of the Rocket Girls by Nathalia Holt. It tells the fascinating story of the women who worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the 1940s and 1950s and offers another glimpse at how deeply buried the contributions of the marginalized have been in this country. And yet it is one of the hardest things to get.For any Amazon product, positive or negative product reviews can be the difference between success and failure.Heres how to get amazon book reviews:Learn Amazon book review guidelinesBuild a launch team for book reviewsContact Amazon top reviewersApply to book review sitesInclude a reminder in your bookRelaunch your bookDeal with negative reviewsGo through the Amazon book review checklistTheres nothing more painful after going through the blood, sweat, and tears of writing, publishing, a nd launching your book, to get very few to no sales because of your lack of reviews. But where do we start to get Amazon reviews? Who do we ask? How do we get reviews that our audience will respect? How many people should we have on our launch team to guarantee a certain number of reviews for setting up promotional sites? How many reviews is enough? We will look at the ways to get legitimate Amazon reviews for your book so that you can reap the benefits of turning your book into a thriving long-term business.NOTE: We cover everything in this blog post and much more about the writing, marketing, and publishing process in our VIP Self-Publishing Program. Learn more about it hereHow to Get Amazon Reviews and the Review ProcessWhen you publish a book, there are essentially 6 things that score at making your book a bestseller. They are:A great book cover design. An irresistible book title. An amazing book description.Stealthy keywords.Targeted book categories. And†¦ Book Reviews. When Amaz on ranks your book, the ranking is based on the volume of downloads your book gets and, the amount of reviews stacked on the book’s review page.Amazon’s system is designed to take notice of books that are getting steady traction when reviews get posted. This is why it is critical that when you launch your book you set everything up to get as many reviews as possible to get momentum going, increase organic traffic, and drive your rankings in the search engines. This means a higher percentage of people writing reviews for your book, not just at launch, but for months (and years) down the road. The bottom line is, reviews carry big weight in the form of social proof that can drive your book to a bestseller and continue to bring in healthy passive income every month. Why do book reviews matter?Because of Amazons algorithm, maintaining a steady income of new book reviews is vital for your book to rise in the rankings. Meaning that if you want your book to continue to sell, you need to obtain real and fresh book reviews. This is a breakdown of why book reviews matter:The more reviews you get, the more visibility your book gets. This means more sales and potential organic reviews. You create a stronger relationship with your readersA boatload of reviews adds credibility to your book and brand.Book reviews for your book on Amazon are one of the defining factors that determine if a potential reader will click the BUY NOW button or not. In fact, if your book has less than 10 reviews, there is a strong chance that your book will get passed over.People want validation before purchasing, and the best way to make that decision is on the front of the product page: reviews. Amazon Reviewer GuidelinesYou can find everything you need to know about posting reviews on Amazon right here under the Community Guidelines.Amazon has tightened the ropes on reviews and as an author, you have to be aware of the tactics that are prohibited. Here is what not to do when it comes to g etting book reviews on Amazon:Pay someone to leave a review. This not only goes against Amazons terms, but it could get your book removed from the shelf and your account banned.Offer a free ‘gift’ in exchange for a review. No gifts allowed. This is still considered payment for a review.Join Facebook groups offering book review swaps. These sites are bad news. Amazon prohibits review swapping and is considered gaming the system. The Amazon algorithm can easily trace reviews back to these sources.Offer an Amazon gift card after a review has been published. It works like this: â€Å"You download the book and leave a review, and I will send you a gift card.† Again, this is against policy and is considered paying for a review.Leave a review for an author, then contact that person requesting they leave a review in return. This would be a form blackmail or trapping the other author into guilt. But this doesn’t work and if you receive any such email, inform the ot her author that you don’t work that way. I did this once and they just removed their review. Most of these fall under the label of incentivized reviews, as there is a form of compensation in exchange for a review by Amazon sellers. Amazon has made it their mission to crack down on these on their platform.Whats the Difference Between Verified and Unverified Book Reviews?According to Amazon,an â€Å"Amazon Verified Purchase† review means theyve verified that the person writing the review purchased the product at Amazon and didn’t receive the product at a deep discountProduct reviews that are not marked â€Å"Amazon Verified Purchase† are valuable as well, but we either can’t confirm that the product was purchased at Amazon or the customer did not pay a price available to most Amazon shoppers.Verified reviews are favorable and are social proof that the reader did in fact buy the book and has potentially read through it before posting a review. A verifi ed review shows up as a yellow banner that says â€Å"Verified Purchase, as seen in the example below:For unverified reviews, in most cases, the reviewer received an advance copy of the book and was possibly on a launch team to support the book’s release. While this is still a legit practice for garnering reviews for your book, if the majority of reviews are non-verified, this could affect your potential customer’s decision to buy or not.HowtoGetMoreAmazonBookReviewsThere are many ways to get reviews but searching for reviewers to review your book is a time-consuming process. You could waste precious time chasing bad leads and end up with nothing for your effort. So where do you get reviews without spending hordes of time?No matter how you do it, remember that it isn’t just about quantity but quality as well. While we can’t control what reviewers will say about our work, we can stay focused on writing great content that adds value in order to increase our chances of getting positive reviews. To get Amazon reviews for your next book launch, or to add reviews to an existing book, consider taking action on these following strategies:#1 Build a launch teamThere are many ways to hunt down reviewers for your book. As we have seen, you can contact the top reviewers, target free book review sites, or reach out to book bloggers. These methods, while they may get you a handful of reviews, is time intensive and a lot of work. I have found, after running over two dozen book launches, that the most effective way to get reviews fast on launch is through setting up a launch team.Your launch team is a group of people who have agreed to read your book in advance and follow up with a review immediately after the book is live. When it comes to building a launch team, it is about building relationships over the long term. This is why, in order to run an effective launch team, you should focus on the relationship with your early-bird reviewers. Here is a st ep-by-step process for organizing your team:How to Set Up a Launch Team1. Start building your relationships early. Launch teams don’t just happen. They take work, months of outreaching, and asking the right people if they want to help launch your book when the time is right. You can generate interest by posting snippets of the book on Social media, sharing chapters of your work with your list, and promoting your cover to people.Share your content and advertise your brand. Communicate with people in person and through online channels about your writing. Keep in mind the purpose for this is to make genuine relationships with people and not to just add them to your launch. And most importantly, to make friends with people who read in your niche, so that your book gets recommended alongside the other books they’re reading.2. Create your list of potential reviewers. As you build these relationships with your fanbase, start making a list of people who express interest in joi ning your launch. If you have multiple books and have been through the publishing process already, take note of the readers who have left reviews already.Contact them closer to the launch of your next book to get them on board. Set up an excel spreadsheet and keep track of the names of people who sign up.Action Step:Contact people directly and invite them to the launch team. Keep track of early-bird reviewers in excel.3. Set up an email template through your email server. Add everyone to the list. If you aren’t using an email server yet you can check out Mailchimp, Convert Kit or Mailerlite. Make it as easy as possible so you aren’t wasting time searching for contact information.Send out a welcome email with a link to your book in PDF or/and Mobi form. You can create a folder in Dropbox and just include the link to a shared folder. Make it easy for them to access the material.Action Step: Import your list of emails onto an email server list.4. Send out the Welcome emai l. Ideally you want to send out your book at least two weeks before launch. This gives people enough time to read it through. In the welcome email I include details for the launch date and any other expectations. At this stage the book isn’t live yet so you will send another email on that day with the link. For the book delivery, you can upload a PDF version as well as a Mobi version of the book. To create a MOBI, PDF or EPUB file you can check out the Calibre ebook management software.Heres the difference between EPUB vs MOBI vs PDF so you can choose which to use. After you have all the files ready, you can create a shared folder in Dropbox and share the link with your team.If any top reviewers agreed to leave a review, you absolutely want to message them to follow up.Action Step:Create a welcome email template. Send out your welcome message to the team. Include a link to your book content.5. Send out your ‘Take Action’ email on launch day. Your book is live and i t is time for people to step up. Contact the team on launch day as soon as the book is live. After publishing a book it should take 12-24 hours for Amazon to get it posted. In the email, include a link to your book. More specifically, a link to the review page so that team members can go straight to the page with one click.6. Day 3: Reminder email. I wait 3 days and send out a reminder email. In this email I thank everyone who has left a review and thank people in advance who are still working on the book and haven’t posted yet.7. Final Call: This is the last email I will send out. Similar to the previous email, reminding people the book is live and is ready for a review whenever you are. You can remind your team that book is at a special discounted price if you are launching it at 0.99 or it’s free.8. Contact Your List: If you have a list, this is gold for getting paid downloads and possible reviews. You should contact your list on the first day the book is live and l et people know that the book has just launched. Then, several days later, email them again asking if they had a chance to get into the material. You could add something of value here just to show subscribers how much you value their support. This is the email where I include a ‘leave a review’ invite. These are the steps I use to communicate with my launch team. Generally speaking, if you want 100 reviews for your book, you should aim for at least 200 people. That is a lot of emails but, what I have experienced is that, on average, you are batting a 50% success rate. What happens to those other 50% who don’t review?Heres why some people wont review your book:They didn’t like the book. They forgot to review altogether. They didn’t read the book. They couldn’t be bothered to review. If you can get 20+ reviews on launch after one week you are looking very good. This is enough to get momentum moving and the Amazon algorithm will see that your book is d oing well.#2 Contact Amazon Top ReviewersThere is a list of top 1000 reviewers on Amazon. These people review everything via the Amazon vine program, although certain reviewers target books specifically. If you can get an Amazon Top Reviewer to look at your book, this is well worth it.Check out the Amazon Top Customer Reviewers list. This is a time-consuming process but, if you can get 2-3 reviewers to agree to a book review, you’re all set.Heres how to get more reviews on Amazon with top reviewers:Go into the reviewer’s profile and check the books they have reviewed. To be specific, you want to check for books in your genre. If you wrote a book on weight loss and the reviewer has written most of their reviews for romance novels, it’s a good indication of what they favor. Target the reviewers interested in your topic.Check for contact information. Due to the large volume of spam and requests for reviews, most top reviewers have removed their personal email. If they have a website set up, you can send a direct email to request a review.Wait for a reply. Most reviewers, from my own experience, did not reply. I would recommend targeting 20 reviewers and wait one week. You can then resend the request again. This is a time-consuming process but, if you get a top reviewer to agree to a review, keep that person’s contact information in an excel file. Then, when you launch your next book, you can reach out to them again and again.#3 Book Review SitesThere are a number of sites out there that will find reviewers for your book. This is not the same as buying reviews for your book which, I’ll restate again, goes against Amazon’s review policy and should be avoided. In fact, Amazon has taken action against over 1000 sites on Fiverr that were selling incentivized reviews and fake review services. Yes, avoid.Review services, however, can speed up the process and find reviewers for your book. One of my favorites is BookRazor. It is a paid site but they promote a system of honest reviewers for your book by providing a contact list of potential readers. There are many other sites you can check out as well, and many of them are free while some are paid:Kindle Book ReviewRainbow Book ReviewsKO’s Stuffed ShelfThe Kindle Book Review#4 Include a reminder in your bookHere is a tactic that works well. Did you know that you can include insert a request in your book for readers to leave a review? It’s a great way to invite people to review your book.I have a page at the back of my books that looks like this:What Did You Think of [Your Book Title Here]?First of all, thank you for purchasing this book [Your Book Title Here]. I know you could have picked any number of books to read, but you picked this book and for that I am extremely grateful.I hope that it added at value and quality to your everyday life. If so, it would be really nice if you could share this book with your friends and family by posting to Fa cebook and Twitter. If you enjoyed this book and found some benefit in reading this, I’d like to hear from you and hope that you could take some time to post a review on Amazon. Your feedback and support will help this author to greatly improve his writing craft for future projects and make this book even better. You can follow this link to [Book link here] now.I want you, the reader, to know that your review is very important and so, if you’d like to leave a review, all you have to do is click here and away you go. I wish you all the best in your future success! When you do this, you want to have a link directing customers right back to the review page on Amazon. Make it so easy for them that it requires as little effort as possible. Many authors will include a cute ‘cat photo’ or even pictures of their kids begging asking for a review. This strategy can work well if you sell a large volume of books during the initial launch phase. But remember it takes reader s time to go through your book and so, if you don’t see the reviews appear in the first week, you might get them trickling in weeks or even months later.#5 Relaunch Your BookYou can relaunch your book if book sales drop and the reviews stop coming in. When you relaunch your book, you can put together a new launch team, and even add a new chapter to the book to generate a renewed interest in your book.I have tried this strategy several times in the past year and, by relaunching the book, adding new value to the content, I put together another small launch team of 30-40 people. This brought in another 20+ reviews for a book that was suffering from lack of sales and poor rankings. It happens, so we have to stay on top of keeping the book active. How to Deal with Negative ReviewsGetting positive reviews on your book is a great feeling. In a perfect world, we all want to have just the good stuff when it comes to our review platform. But alas, there will always be that dissatisfied reader that was expecting something much different than what your book was offering.Readers will leave a negative review for various reasons, and in most cases, there is nothing we can do.But first of all, receiving a negative review isn’t the end of the world. In fact, it can lend to a book’s credibility. Look at it from a reader’s perspective. If a book has 100 positive 5-star reviews, although the reviews may be legitimate, we know that not every book is perfect.Having a load of good reviews and nothing that is under three stars could create doubt for the browser, just as having a book with only a handful of reviews turns browsers the other way. While negative reviews aren’t all bad, there are steps we can take to reduce the amount. So how can we prevent our book from getting a lot of negative reviews and turning away potential book sales? Here are four areas to pay attention to:Book quality: the single biggest reason a book will get panned by negative re views is poor quality. This is credited to sloppy editing. A book that is not up to the quality expected by readers will get hit with a high amount of bad reviews. Then, it could get pulled off the shelf by Amazon until the author upgrades to better quality. Make sure your book is up the high standards people expect. Always respect your readers. The book business is like any other business, make good products, and your customers will love you.Inaccurate description of the book: make sure that your book description, title and cover all point towards the theme of the book. If your book is titled, â€Å"How to become rich in 21 days† and, after reading through the book the reader isn’t rich, well, they bought the book because of the promise you made. So, if reading a book delivers a negative outcome for your audience, someone is going to shout about it in a review.Your book is a sales pitch for your other products. If there is one thing that readers don’t like, it is being hit up with offers and the push to check out other services or products in the book. This could come across as spammy and devalues the content that the readers paid for. While your goal may be to use the book to attract customers for your online business, you want to avoid any sales pitches in the book. How to Write and Submit a ReviewWriting a review for a book you like is a great way to drive potential readers to the title. If you read a great book recently and you want to tell people about it, you can take a few minutes to write up a positive review.Writing a review is easy. Just go to the book’s front page and, under the heading Customer Reviews, you will see a button for write a customer review. Click on that and you will be taken to a page set up for ‘Your Reviews’ where you can write reviews for your purchases. What you do is:Select the rating of the book from 1-5 stars, with 5 being the best score.Write your book description in the box provided. Ke ep in mind that if you leave this page before submitting your review, you’ll have to start over again. I would recommend writing the review first in Word or Evernote and then copy and paste.Create a headline for the review.Hit submit. Your review will go live within a couple of hours, although it could take up to 24 hours. One point to note here is that, with Amazon’s policy for posting reviews, you have to have an account that has made a purchase of at least $50 using a valid credit or debit card.Checklist for Getting Amazon Book ReviewsIf you follow these steps, youll be able to get more book reviews and in turn, sell more books.Set up a launch team for your book. Send your team a PDF/MOBI/EPUB file and follow up with email right up until launch. Follow up with several reminders after the launch.Include a ‘Review Request’ page at the back of your book. Insert the link taking customers directly to the review page. Make it so easy they don’t have to search around for the book on Amazon.Contact Amazon Top Reviewers. Send a personalized email to each, targeting the people who review books similar to your genre. Wait at least two weeks before following up.Contact people in your business. This doesn’t include friends and family. Contact professionals in your field who would be willing to read the book with the possibility of leaving an honest review.Hire a site that specializes in finding honest reviewers for your book. I recommend BookRazor.Relaunch your book. Add more content, a new book cover, or make it appealing for people to join your relaunch of an existing book. You can relaunch a book as many times as you want. There are a lot of strategies out there to get reviews for your books, most are legit, and some are not. As an author, make sure you are aware of what Amazon considers to be authentic reviews when it comes to gathering reviews for your next book, and steer clear of anything it considers to be incentivized revi ews.If a site promises to get you positive reviews in return for cash, stay away. It isnt worth it, trust me. Keep hunting and adding reviews to your book.Book reviews are the secret sauce to adding value and credibility to your work, boosting sales and making your book stick on the bestseller lists. Dont skimp out on them. Its Time for Your FREE TrainingOne of the easiest and most natural ways to get good book reviews is to write a book worthy of them.Heres how you can learn to do that.

Is a mandatory moment of silence in public schools constitutional Term Paper

Is a mandatory moment of silence in public schools constitutional - Term Paper Example formulation. This effort is intended to give students reflection time without the influence of any specific religious orientation. The supporters of this position argue that this moment can be used by students to pray, meditate or study. Unfortunately, the result of this effort has served to obfuscate the matter rather than to clarify and set guidelines. Many argue that the mandatory moment of silence is nothing more than state-sanctioned prayer in disguise. Atheists and other â€Å"non-religious† advocates argue that there are other time periods in the course of a student’s day that can be set aside for this silence and, in fact, since personal prayer is something that can be done by students on their own time and without anyone knowing, why set aside a time during the official day for this purpose? Since the 1962 Engel vs. Vitale ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, different state courts have ruled in very different ways on the constitutionality of a public school’s mandatory moment of silence. For example, in 1976, the state of Virginia passed a law that allowed public schools to practice a one minute moment of silence. However, in 1985, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Wallace vs. Jaffree that the moment of silence was unconstitutional. Despite this, in 2000, the state of Virginia passed another law requiring public schools to observe a moment of silence every day. Since the 2000 action by the state of Virginia, other states have also enacted laws that allow students the opportunity to observe a moment of silence. To date, 12 states require that students be given the opportunity to exercise a moment of silence in public school classrooms. Further, in 20 other states, teachers are given the option to allow a moment of silence in their classrooms. In October 2000, the U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton, ruled that a â€Å"moment of silence†

The high salaries paid to CEOs are not justified. To what extent do Essay - 1

The high salaries paid to CEOs are not justified. To what extent do you agree with this statement - Essay Example To the contrary junior employees’ salaries have stagnated or dropped and where they are raised the increment in percentage is insignificant compared to the CEOs increment in percentage within the same period. The paper will aim to consider the various facets surrounding the issue and the evidences under each. The CEOs salaries are not necessarily the true reflection of their performance or skills and therefore not justified to be that high. Companies that have awarded hefty pay packages to their CEOs have not been necessarily the highest performers in the business. To some extents these companies’ performance has been dwindling over time. This phenomenon therefore has raised genuine concerns over the unreasonable salaries the CEOs take home. An example of this kind of a scenario is Eisner of Disney who pocketed 38 million US Dollars in 2004 (Stanford GSB, 2005). This was way above the average in the entertainment industry at the time. This amount was awarded not considering that under his 6 years tenure till then, the company’s performance was actually on the decline during half of that period. The CEOs pay when compared to that of the junior staff members has risen to a staggering 400 percent from around 90 percent a decade ago (Frydman 2008). Looking at these figures and disparity one cannot help but question the trend. The obvious conclusion a lay man would lay to this scenario is that the high pay is hooked to performance and level of skill that the new manager has. In looking at this assumption it is in almost all cases that other factors other than skills and performance contribute to the huge salaries. It has been seen that in big companies where the chance of having pay not related to performance, the CEOs end up getting more than their counterparts in the small firms. This situation is usually worse in cases where the pay has been in form of stocks and where the firm has a large shareholder. In this latter scenario there is a high likelihood

One Step Home Brewing Kit Essay Example for Free

One Step Home Brewing Kit Essay There are a lot of home brewing kits available in market but all have a typical problem associated with it. We have come with a new â€Å"One Step Home Brewing Kit† based on our patented technology. Soon we plan to launch it in market. We did a market research for such product and gained a lot of valuable information. Based on all those observations we have come with the following plan. We would be operating through internet instead of setting up a shop for it, at least for the initial phase. Not only it reaches to more people but also is more convenient to operate. We won’t run the website ourselves but would outsource to a separate company. Our research shows that outsourcing would be cheaper. We have finalized our hosting company and hosting plans. The initial one time cost comes to be around $10,000/-. Regarding our financials For the first month our primary target is set our infrastructure right. We need to get comfortable with the setup, optimize our settings. So, for the first month we won’t be spending much on advertising but would mainly focus on our acquaintance and word-of-mouth publicity to get our customers. We have kept a modest sales target of 100 units. Each kits selling price would be $30/-. Cost of revenue is assumed to be 45% of revenue. Biggest expense during this time would be of setting up the website which includes one time cost of website hosting, web designing and taking photographs of our product. The setting up process will take around 20 -25 days. From the last few days of the month we would increase our advertisements and also would put user experiences of our product on the website. Rough estimate shows a loss for the first month which is very well expected at the beginning of a business firm. In the second month we expect sales of around 500 units. This increase is expected due to increase in our advertising and the positive feedback given by our customers for our product. We ourselves have no doubt that our product is best and hence expect strong positive atmosphere for our product in the market. To cater to this increasing need we would need to purchase a new computer and hire an operator for that. The New system’s cost is put in office equipment expenses field. This would increase our staff from 1 to 2. We also would have to work in those positions to curtail our staff requirements For the 3rd month we expect sales of around 800 units and hope to induce a new staff and a new computer to keep up with our increasing customer visits and their database. We hope to reach our break even point by the end of 3rd month. For the next quarter we hope to keep a calm speed and again check our system and get the work boundaries of everyone more finer. We would take one more employee at non technical position. For 3rd quarter we again expect a rapid increase in our sales due to the previous quarter’s corrective steps. We will introduce a new staff in our team to concentrate specifically on our advertising. So our advertising cost reaches an all time high. For final quarter we hope to keep up this good trend. For 2nd year we will try to outsource some of our processes like dispatching, packing etc. so that we focus more on our core competence i. e. our product. We will also try to start RD around our product. This will help us bring out some new product. We will first be looking to bring some product that would complement our product. Also we may venture out in new areas if they seem perfect for our conditions. Our Rent is going to increase by 20% In 3rd year we will double our infrastructure. This may be for our new product or to keep the increased volume of sales of our existing product. This year we will definitely setup our RD if they are not setup to the full extent in the second year. As the world is progressing fast in technology fields and future would hold golden days for technology products. We will surely bring some product in this domain. Our core product would of course be always our focus and we will always try to better it. As we move past the expected milestones we would surely be getting more experienced and will fine tune our expenses, Mobilize our staff to specific positions. This is our plan till now and we hope to surpass it every month, quarte

The CMOS technology plays a major role on the performance of microprocessors on very large scale integrated circuit chips. The rapid growth in CMOS technology with the shrinking transistor size towards 16nm has allowed for placement of several billions of transistors on a single microprocessor chip. This also leads to reduce the delay of logic gates in the order of pico seconds. One such method to improve the performance of microprocessor is to optimize the timing performance of dynamic circuits. In this paper a full adder circuit is designed and simulated using rate sensing keeper technique with L=0.12ÃŽ ¼m technology and VDD=1.2 V for improving the timing and noise tolerance also the noise tolerance characteristics of the full adder circuit designed using rate sensing keeper is compared with twin transistor based full adder circuit. Keywords— Bias,Domino logic, noise tolerance, rate sensing, timing optimization. I. INTRODUCTION HE rapid advancement in semiconductor technology with the shrinking transistor size towards 16nm has allowed for placement of several billion transistors on a single microprocessor chip[1]. CMOS technology plays a major role on the performance of VLSI microprocessors [2].The timing performance of the microprocessor can be improved by using dynamic circuits in microprocessors [3]. However the usage of dynamic circuits in microprocessors is limited due to many challenges including transistor sizing, charge sharing, leakage current, noise immunity and environmental and semiconductor process variations etc [4].Timing optimization of dynamic circuits can be achieved through several methods such as transistor sizing, using multiple threshold voltages etc.[5],[6],[7].The aggressive scaling of transistors and interc... ... and the experimental results shows that the full adder circuit designed using rate sensing keeper transistor technique gives superior performance compared to the other alternatives such as Conditional Keeper (CKP) and current mirror-based keeper (LCR). Fig.22. Output noise Vs Vbias characteristics of full adder using Rate Sensing Keeper technique IV. CONCLUSION In this paper the performance of a full adder circuit designed using rate sensing keeper transistor technique is analyzed in detail and its performance is compared with other full adder circuits. The full adder circuit is simulated using L=0.12ÃŽ ¼m technology along with supply voltage VDD=1.2V. The experimental results shows that the full adder circuit designed using rate sensing keeper transistor technique gives superior performance compared to full adder circuits designed using conventional domino techniques.

Marriage and New Brand-name Establishments

– What a surprise to see you here. How many ages, since we’ve last seen, what’s new? – Oh, a lot of things. We’ve moved to another city, it’s much more comfortable to live in a city, not in countryside. It’s faster to get to the job, there are much more amusements and children are enraptured with their new school! – As for me, I don’t agree with you that live in the city is much easier, it’s healthier to live in the countryside, and, besides, what happened to you? I remember, that you had told, that you’ll never move to another place. We were all delighted about our city after graduation.By the way it has changed much. – You see, life moves fast, so I try to be in the swim. Now I think it’s time to move in the cities, it’s much more interesting there, much more employment prospects. And how are you? – I have left in our town after graduation. My life has changed a lot. We were gra duated as lawyers, but then I realized that law is not something for me, so I became a designer. – Oh, dear, what you are talking about? Are there any other women who would graduate from university of law and become a designer? Oh, well, you’ve always amazed me with your decisions. So, I see you’ve got married as well. – Yes, do you remember Harry? Our group mate? He is my husband. – Oh, what a surprise, my congratulations! Is he is still working as a legal assistant? – No, he is a court-appointed attorney. He used to work hard, finally he got this high position, I’m so proud of him. – You seem to have a very happy family life. I have never thought that you would become such a nice and adorable wife, you used to tell, that you’re going to take up the world as the best lawyer the earth ever seen and now you tell me, that you’re married and proud of your husband making your career. I do, I used to work as attorney as well, but I have left the job, because it’s very difficult for me to combine job and family. Now I am making some money on the side being a designer for one of those new brand-name establishments in our town. For me it’s very important to be a good wife, and, by the way, we’re waiting a baby. – Are you serious? Such a great piece of news! My congratulations. And as for me, I’ve got divorced. My husband didn’t like that I’m working so much, it was the time, when I was coming up to the world, I didn’t like the idea to risk with my career for living with him, so it was the end. But I know that you have a wonderful daughter, how old is she? – She is nine. We’ve got divorced after her birth. It was a good experience for me. I will not marry anyone, who’s going to teach me how to live. – You sound very independent. Are you really happy being single, I mean are you really sure of that kind, that happiness is when you’re making up your career and there’s no man in your life, who would take care of you? – Oh no, I just don’t want to live with somebody, who thinks, that my opinion is not that important as his.As for family, I hope to meet somebody, a true love, you see, and I feel, that this moment is quite near. – You’re right, and I’m sure, you’ll meet it very soon. Do you remember Patrick? – Oh yes, that boy from our group, that I used to like so much. – He was quite interested, when he heard that you’re coming to our city and he wants to see you. What do you think about going to an alumni reunion this evening? – I’d love to! I’ll be there. – Ok, see ya there, I’ll wait you in the hall at 6 pm – Ok)

Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin

In â€Å"Black Like Me† by John Howard Griffin identifies how conflict management greatly changes after he undergoes a drastic lifestyle change to discover the truth of how people are categorized by their skin color and not their own character. Griffin undergoes an experiment in order to allow him to study and elaborate on racial boundaries that still exist during the 1950†³s. Griffin, almost immediately realizes segregation and low self-esteem caused by the feeling of being hated due to the color of your skin. The conflict management in the book changes drastically after his pigment is changed and he is no longer part of a privileged white American society, and now he his part of a hated society due to physical differences that make them seem inferior to the dominate race. Griffin†s conflict management style greatly changes after he undergoes his experiment. At the beginning of his journey, he was very aggressive, and took things for granite such as eating in restaurants and using public facilities. After he changes his pigmentation it changes his conflict management due to what he is succumbed to because of the change in the variation of his skin color. The only conflict management skills he had were the ones he learned by watching others who were adapted to the Society. For instance, â€Å"blacks see themselves as inferior to whites because of the society they live in†. For example, † on the bus ride to Mississippi, Griffin encounters a man who black on the outside, and tries to think of himself as part of the white culture and hopes when he dies, the white part of his soul shall go to heaven†. Griffin conflict management is passive in the end only because he is observing and he doesn†t want to draw attention to himself, which might get him into trouble. Griffin†s conflict management is arbitrary because he is no longer what he was before the experiment and knows he is going to have to live like a black male for the rest of his natural life.

An exploration into the role of social group stereotyping in teen movies with particular reference to Wild Child 2008 Essay Example

An exploration into the role of social group stereotyping in teen movies with particular reference to Wild Child 2008 Essay Example An exploration into the role of social group stereotyping in teen movies with particular reference to Wild Child 2008 Essay An exploration into the role of social group stereotyping in teen movies with particular reference to Wild Child 2008 Essay Essay Topic: Call of the Wild Dubliners Into the Wild Thirteen Reasons Why Wild An exploration into the role of social group stereotyping in teen movies with particular reference to Wild Child 2008 A stereotype is the preconceived assumption about an individuals characteristics, which place them in a particular group in society. Stereotyping usually forms the basis of prejudice and discrimination not only racial, gender and sexuality but in sub-stereotyping such as the jocks, plastics and geeks as demonstrated in countless teen films. It is a form of social consensus rather than individual judgments and is subconsciously practised by everyone, right or wrong, its inescapable. Walter Lippmann argued that seeing through stereotypes (which he coined in this specific meaning) subjected us to partial truths. 1. The teen sitcom, Saved By The Bell features a typical group of high school stereotypes such as a class clown (Zack Morris), a jock (A.C. Slater), a nerd (Samuel Screech Powers), a cheerleader (Kelly Kapowski), a feminist (Jessie Spano), and a superficial fashion plate (Lisa Turtle) 2 Representation is the artificial versions of the reality we perceive around us; the messages and ideas we interpret from an image / sound. Representation began with early literary theory in the ideas of Plato and Aristotle, Mitchell says representation is an extremely elastic notion, which extends all the way from a stone representing a man to a novel representing the day in the life of several Dubliners3. Semiotic study refers to the meaning of signs and media uses this method to influence the audiences reading of the text. In the teen-pic such signs used are the glasses, the high-wasted-ankle-bashing trousers with braces, slicked down hair unflattering clothing and spots for the geek as shown in Not another Teen Movie directed by Joel Gallen released in 2002 parodies almost 30 popular teen movies. There is no plot to the film, simply a mixture of clichà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½s and other classic moments and a common use of conventions from previous teen pictures. Chyler Leigh as Janey Brigs is a nerd who wears glasses paint splattered overalls and a simplistic hair style, who is later transformed into a prom beauty. The director uses this iconography to establish their characters clearly. The teen movie, also referred to as teenpic and teen film, is a sub-genre, which is targeted at teenagers in which the narrative is based upon the special interests of young adults. One of the first teenpic began in 1955 rebel without a cause this was the first time society came to understand that teenagers (young adults) existed. In 1990, Rebel Without a Cause was added to the preserved films of the United States Library of Congresss National Film Registry as being deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant4 The stories, of what most teenpics are about, are known by theorists as the liminal experience (Adrian Martin 1994). The period suggesting, Frozen teenage time between childhood and adulthood. Over the years the teen movie has merged with other genres: 1970s saw one of the most famous musical films ever Grease followed in the 1980s by Dirty Dancing and more recent High School Musical. In addition to musicals the teen-horror hybrid has emerged, the craze starte d in the last 1970s with Halloween. This exploits the teenage market as a mass audience by not being an enclosed genre and conforming to what constitutes a popular culture at that contemporary time. Wild Child 2008 is a contemporary teenage movie, directed by Nick Moore starring Emma Roberts as Poppy Moore, Alex Pettyfer as Freddie Kingsley and Natasha Richardson as Mrs. Kingsley. Institutionally Wild Child was released in the U.K on August 15 taking 5th place at the box office with $2,196,366 from 359 theatres. In its 4th weekend, it dropped to 12th place.5 Todorovs theory can be applied to Wild Child, as it can to most modern teenpics, because of the narratives equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium. The narrative explores the life of a spoilt American teenager living the high life in the USA (equilibrium) who is sent to an upper-class private boarding school for girls. Naturally Poppy rebels against the regime as she struggles to find a way to get herself expelled. (Disequilibrium). After numerous failed attempts the ultimate route to expulsion appears to lie in seducing the headmistresss son: Freddie. But as the time of her expulsion draws ever closer and Poppy star ts to settle in and make friends her motives change as she becomes aware of the person she wants to be. (New equilibrium). Wild Child differs somewhat from a lot of teen-pics because the characters are less caricature than those found in a typical, most often American, teen film. The friendship groups do not seem as conventionally defined as most, such as in Mean Girls. It appears to be aimed at the younger teen because of the mild language and absence of strong sexual content and only holds a certificate rating of PG-13, whereas the majority of films are targeted at the late teens and have a certificate rating of 15 18. The director may have seen this gap in the market and created Wild Child specifically for the younger adolescence. The filming on Wild Child does not draw attention to itself however different lighting and colour is used in the beginning of the film of that used later. When Poppy is living her pampered life in Los Angeles the lighting appears artificial being very bright with exaggerated colours and picturesque mis en scene of the beach. Everyones clothes are rich in colour along with a brilliant bright blue sky and ocean, which reflects the perfect weather and lifestyle Poppy had. This is juxtaposed by the grey mundane boarding school of Abbey Mount. The lighting becomes much more natural and colours are less obvious and this conveys realism. The film language supports Poppy as a character, in L.A she chose to wear lots of makeup and long blonde extensions, her attitude was bitchy and spoilt and she was saturated with luxuries that she did not appreciate. Moving to England her personality transformed from worshiping her cell phone to realising her over-dependence on materialistic objects and bec oming honest and true to her friends changing her hair colour to a more subtle brown and ditching the make up. Her character had changed to more down to earth because of the social crowd she was integrating with. The ideology present in the middle of the film touches on body consciousness and image obsession of young girls which is one of societies most talked about issues. A nationwide survey of more than 10,000 adolescents, published in the August issue of Pediatrics, reports a high rate of concern about body image in both boys and girls.6 Poppy asks her friends whether she is hot to trot she tans and cries when she discover ..new season of Gucci in her suitcase is soaking wet. Other ideas along with this include love and relationships, the decline of the nuclear family and rebellion. In the United States of America, the third most populous nation, just under 25% of family units are considered nuclear families.7 The ideology used represents the current social context in which it is set and this is to ensure the teenpic genre is continually renewed to accommodate to its changing audiences. In addition to larger scaled present-day matters Wild Child also taps into individual characters dilemmas of coping with change and social integration between the sub-groups of a high school; worries of how to conform in order to be perceived as one of them. This personal ideology allows the audience to identify with characters. Bullying between social groups has always been a problem in high schools and this is represented in the teenpic. Rebel Without a Cause demonstrates this when Plato, an outsider whom is confused between reality and his own lies but strives for companionship, is rejected by everyone at college and picked on by Buzzs popular bunch. In the 1950s the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States broke out and McCarthyism may have been a factor affecting the inclusion of conflict bullying and violence in the movie. Name calling chicken and even knives were drawn in the beginning of the film followed later by police chases, guns and results in Platos death . McCarthyism was a widespread social and cultural phenomenon that affected all levels of society and was the source of a great deal of debate and conflict in the United States.8 With reference to Wild Child Poppy uses email to bully her friends. Cyber-bullying is a growing issue affecting many teenagers all over the world because of social network sites such as Facebook and Bebo and MSN messenger and email. 42% of kids have been bullied while online. One in four has had it happen more than once 9; and because of this a national anti-bullying week has been held every year since 2005. Teenagers watch teen films for a number of reasons. I think the audiences of teenpics are actively using the text for their particular needs (uses and gratifications theory): Affective needs for entertainment, particularly humor. For example American Pie a successful comedy teen hybrid, dependant on the awkward sex scenes and embarrassment of a high school group for complete hilarity. Also the audience use these films for cognitive needs, to acquire information and understanding of other teens of similar age that come from different cultures. I think teen movies make empathising with others outside of your own social group for youths easier, as many films home into how the under-dog feels i.e. the geek in the teenpic. For example an audience member who falls under the popular category at their own school when watching a teen-pic such as Never Been Kissed and identifying with Josie Gellar who was mocked teased and rejected her whole high school life. Never Been Kissed directed by Raja Gosnell in 1999 is a story about a copy editor from the Chicago Sun Times who is sent undercover to her old high school to find out about what teenagers are like. The film language unveils Josies tormented past through the use of flashbacks. As an audience we are able to understand other peoples emotions in situations unfamiliar to us through their perspective. In contrast an audience may watch a teen movie for self identity. Idolising celebrities and aspiring to be like them, and visualising themselves as that character. A student studying dance is likely to select a dance / teen movie such as Bring it on, Save the Last Dance, Honey and Stomp the Yard because the audience have similar interests and may look, be or act like the character in the film. Wild Child addresses issues which most closely affect the younger teen audience. The film is set in England and so it is most likely to attract an English audience. Following the repertoire of elements for the teen-pic genre the common narratives usually include the high school prom Carrie, the geek becoming popular Thirteen, falling in love High School Musical, loosing of virginity American Pie and getting into college. Generally they follow Todorovs theory with a linear narrative. Teen-pics generally have a feel good happy ending. The popular girls get punished, the geek seeks justice and theres always the ugly girl who falls in-love, Shes All That. A lot of teen films leave the ending inconclusive and produce sequels such as Final Destination 2000 a horror-teen hybrid, there are now four of these movies. The first Final Destination was released before the plane crash attacks of 9/11 in America so was not based on theses events regardless of it being about a premonition about a plane crash. The topical issues and ideology make up the genre of teen. Drugs are commonly present in teen-pics for example Thirteen 2004 directed by Catherine Hardwicke is about a thirteen-year-old girls relationship with her mother is put to the test as she discovers drugs, sex, and petty crime in the company of her cool but troubled best friend. Smoking, snorting cocaine and misuse of solvents all take place during the film. The sickly green wash of the filming and the use of an unsteady hand held camera towards the end of the narrative creates an uneasy trippy feel representing the characters perspective of life. A survey by the World Health Organization reveals that one in three 15 year olds have had sex, two out of three have been drunk and one in three has tried cannabis.10 Thirteen reflects these shocking statistics, as impressionable Tracey finds herself in these situations when peer pressure takes over. The setting is usually at the high school or the shopping mall and other popular teenage hang out points. For example the fairground in Grease. In Wild Child Poppy spends a day raiding the charity shops in the local town near Abbey Mount School with some of her new friends, during this scene Poppys rebellious side is reflected when she purchases alcohol at just 16. The other girls are so impressed by this they adopt her behaviour and attend the evenings disco very drunk wearing outrageous outfits. The stock characters used in teen movies distinguish the teen genre. The archetypical characters rely heavily on cultural types to reflect realism of a high school but in an exaggerated way; this enables the audience to instantly form an opinion and have ready expectations about the role a particular character will play because of previous existing characters. Mean Girls introduces the Plastics, Regina George, Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith. Dressed all in pink, pristine hair and perfect physique with their artificial smiles, the audience at once understand that they are the mean popular / cheerleader type who every girl in school hates but aspires to be like. The girls are referred to as Plastics which reflects todays societys cosmetic surgery obsession. It is leaked out in the film that Regina has had a nose job and her mother, breast implants. In 2003, more than 223,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients 18 years of age or younger and almost 39,000 were surgical proc edures such as nose reshaping, breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks. Every high school has its own social structure with the Jocks and the Cheerleaders top of the hierarchy and the nerds and band geeks at the bottom and this is why directors use them in their text. To make one teen pic unlike another a unique character who doesnt fall typically into a social stereotypical group. Usually being the central protagonist this character is the peace-maker and do-gooder. Lyndsay Lohan in Mean Girls 2004 directed by Mark Waters plays Cady Heron a girl who grew up in Africa and homeschooled, moves to the USA to attend the last year of high school. She didnt really fit into any category and just seemed like a regular teenager and not a Hollywood manufactured archetype. She befriends a socially excluded Goth and bullied gay boy and then slowly transforms into one of the Plastic cliques. Later good comes out of evil when she returns back to her old self and the girls are confronted by their victims. Cady played the interesting character which makes each teen pic individual. Other archetypes include the sexually active bad geeks, jocks, the hot foreign exchange student. In Wild Child Harriet explains the Abbey Mount hierarchy: There is a hierarchy: Teachers, prefects, scholars, dogs, vermin and Americans this differs somewhat to the American high school structure. The iconography of typical teen-pics comprise of cars, books, rucksacks, featuring cafeterias, the gymnasium clothes shops and classrooms as the mis en scene. Almost all have the classic social stereotyping of the students. Each of the sub-groups has an expected location in the school. The tables in the cafeteria will be separated, occupied by one social group at each, little communication occurs between one table and the next. The jocks will have possession over the gymnasium and the basketball courts the music room always crowded by band geeks the girls toilets made unavailable by a row of plastics re-applying their lipstick and a group of cheerleaders ogling the football players on the school field. Conclusively social group stereotyping has played a leading role in the success of the teenpic spanning over decades. They allow directors to establish their genre through these archetypical characters and assist an audience in forming ready ideas about the role they are going to play. As and audience it is in our preference to witness the reoccurrence of the stereotypes identified in a high school because it reflects a reality and allows us to empathise with a character that in life we see and ignore everyday. It provides excellent opportunities for directors to produce parodies on the teen-pic such as Not another Teen Movie because of all the humorous spoofs available to include; and most teens enjoy humour. Although the social structure in teen films has always been present, the characters themselves have evolved with time. The bullies in Rebel Without a Cause differ slightly to the kind of bully we expect to find in a more contemporary teenpic and with this being the case, I thin k the use of social group stereotypes will never tire.

On the instruction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

On the instruction - Essay Example This problem can be solved through parental, guardian as well as educators’ intervention so as to be in a position to educate children about the constructive use of the internet. It should be everyone’s responsibility to provide internet safe education to the children so that they become aware of the risks they are likely to encounter through the use of the internet. The other solution that can be implemented in order to deal with this particular problem is related to empowerment of the children so that they can become masters of the destiny in as far as internet use is concerned. There are different ways of implementing these measures which are likely to provide a long solution to the problem that is related to adverse impacts of the internet on children. According to the Internet Society, â€Å"the most effective way to deal with perceived problems arising from Internet use is to empower children and young people so they know how to safeguard themselves against the a dverse effects of using the internet.† Whilst other strategies are used by different governments such as filtering or blocking websites that are thought to contain malicious information to children, it can be seen that these techniques have their own shortfalls. A holistic approach that is people centred should be implemented in order to address this problem. Empowerment of children with regards to the use of the internet is very effective since this strategy is designed to produce positive benefits of using the internet. There are different empowerment techniques that can be used such as teaching the children about appropriate language to use as well as imparting knowledge to them about their respective communities’ social, cultural and ethical norms that shape their behaviour. Every person belongs to a culture that has norms and values and these create the identity of the people living in that particular area. The culture of people also shapes their identity hence it is the role of the parents in particular to impart knowledge about their cultural values to the children. This can help the children to distinguish between something that is good from bad. Children who are aware of their cultural values are likely to maintain them throughout their lives. These values also help them to know the things they are allowed to do as well as things they are not allowed to do in their society. Morally upright children often display positive traits about their culture and this can redeem them from behaving badly when they are using the internet. It is also important for the parents as well as the educators to educate their children about the positive benefits that can be derived from using the internet. As stated by the Internet Society, it can be observed that the internet is not evil since it has significantly improved our lives in various ways. There are more benefits that are likely to be obtained from using the internet than the negative aspects such as the ones mentioned above. Essentially, parents and the educators should always strive to educate their children to be in a position to make a distinction between something that is bad from good. Whilst the parents and teachers spend most of the time with their children, it can be noted that they cannot control their behaviour all the

Gender Roles Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3

Gender Roles - Essay Example Necessarily there exists an attempt -on the individual level as it is evident in Troy’s fatherly affection towards his children and in Bonno’s anxiety that he also might repeat his father’s role- to restore order and peace in conjugal life. Though Troy driven by sexual impulses makes contra-social relationship with Alberta, his fatherly affection and sense of responsibility for his wife proves him to be more of a sensible social being than of a member of the egoist patriarchy. Regarding Troy’s responsibility to his family, Storm (n.d.) says, â€Å"He was not in love with Rose, but felt a responsibility to her† (p. 3). But in the opposite manner, not only the roles of the male characters such as Othello, Iago, Cassio etc in the â€Å"Othello† and attitudes towards women and love, but also the passivity of the female characters depict a male dominated society in which a female figure is shaped according to what the male wants to and women’s voice is never paid heed to, as Desdemona’s true claim about her fidelity and loyalty has continuously been ignored by her husband. Referring to Othello’s ideal conception of Desdemona, Guffey (2005) says, â€Å"Othello had a perception of Desdemona that was altered by the machinations of Iago.   Desdemona contributed to that perception by fulfilling a role that she thought was ideal for Othello.   She wanted to be Othello’s perfect woman, so she portrayed herself as pure and virginal to her husband.† (p. 3). In comparison to Shakespeare’s â€Å"Othello†, the male characters of the â€Å"Fences† are less assertive to be the representatives of modern patriarchy. On the surface level Troy appears to be a bully, but he needs her support. He is not completely haughty; rather he pays heed to her and provides financial help to Lyon. At least, Troy does not hold any patriarchal-idealistic view of women’s fidelity. When he finds his father molesting his girlfriend, he beats his father, not the girl. But it
